Being both as in balancing between the two philosophies? I train with both mind sets but when it comes down to it my fundamentals are that of the more traditional, survival.

Training to compete or with a competition mindset, it is important to stay active and on the attack in order to cope with the time limit.

My favorite event to date was the Gracie Open in 2003. No time limit and many competitors. Great event and the Gracie family came through with what they said about the tournament...the grand prize really was a "life changing experience".

Why not be both ? I am geared more to sport jiujitsu, easily. But the defensive portions of the gracie jiujitsu are so important to me and my future as a teacher. I want to be able to teach woman, and children and weak people alike how to defend themselves, to prevail under any circumstances.

But I love Renzo Gracie and Rener Gracie, both make compelling arguments. But in the end i just hope we all win.
